You do not need matching jerseys.
You do not need a microphone.
You do not need an official who has memorized 46 pages of cornhole regulations.
You need teams.
Boards.
Bags.
And a bracket.
Here's the easy version.
Step 1: Decide How Serious This Is
There are two types of cornhole tournaments.
Type One: Friendly.
Type Two: Someone has already started arguing about the rules.
For most parties, weddings, company events and fundraisers, Type One is better.
Keep the format simple and tell everyone from the beginning that the purpose is to have fun.
It won't prevent all arguments.
But you tried.
Step 2: Pick Teams of Two
Two-person teams keep games moving and make the tournament social.
Let players choose their own teammates or randomly draw teams if you want people mixing together.
Random teams work especially well at company events and family reunions.
Step 3: Use Multiple Sets
This is where renting boards can make a huge difference.
One set means one game happens at a time.
Four sets means four games can happen at once.
For a large tournament, that drastically reduces the amount of time people spend waiting.
Step 4: Keep Scoring Simple
For a casual event:
Bag on board = 1 point.
Bag in hole = 3 points.
Play to 21.
Use cancellation scoring: total each team’s points for the round, then subtract the lower score from the higher score. Only the difference is added to the leading team’s score. For example, 7 points against 4 adds 3 points. Agree on any casual house rules before the first game.
Step 5: Make the Prize Funny
Cash makes people weird.
A ridiculous trophy makes people happy.
Try:
A championship belt.
A gold spray-painted cornhole bag.
A $25 gift card.
A giant trophy.
A framed photo of the winners that gets displayed at next year's event.
The worse the trophy looks, the more people will want it.
Step 6: Leave Boards Open Afterward
The tournament may last an hour.
The rental can entertain people all day.
Once the bracket is finished, leave the games open for casual play.
That gives everyone who lost in round one a chance to restore their dignity.
